Just in time for Labor Day, our gift shop now has honey!
This honey was produced at hives right on the Angel Mounds site by beekeepers Kelsey Gerhardt and Frank Weatherholt. Each bottle has one pound of pure honey, and sells for $10. As with everything sold in the Angel Mounds gift shop, all proceeds go to support the mission of Friends of Angel Mounds.
On August 18, representatives of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology at Indiana University, the Indiana Historic Society, and the Indiana Historical Bureau joined together to dedicate a new historical marker honoring Glenn A. Black, the first professional archaeologist to excavate at Angel Mounds. During a brief ceremony, speakers shared stories of Black’s legacy in Indiana archaeology. You can watch the ceremony on our YouTube channel!
In addition, Saturday also marked the opening of a brand new exhibit at the Angel Mounds Interpretive Center: the Glenn Black and Eli Lilly Experience, which looks at Black’s and Lilly’s collaboration in the 1930’s and 1940’s to begin scientific excavations at Angel Mounds. The new display combines amazing prehistoric artifacts from Lilly’s personal collection with authentic archaeological equipment used at Angel in the mid-20th century. There are also fun interactive displays that explain how Black’s excavations revealed the hidden past of Angel Mounds.
The new exhibit highlights both sides of Angel Mounds’ story: the prehistoric Mississippians who lived here, and the dedicated archaeologists who helped us to recover their history. Come by and check it out soon!
If you’ve walked through the Angel Mounds Interpretive Center lately, you’ve no doubt noticed the construction! We’ve been busily preparing for the opening of a new exhibit
that highlights the work of two of the biggest names in Indiana archaeology: Glenn Black—the first professional archaeologist to excavate at Angel Mounds—and Eli Lilly—one of the great patrons of early archaeological research in the state.
On Saturday, August 18, at 10AM, officials with the Indiana State Museum will dedicate a new historical marker commemorating the life of Glenn Black at his former home on Pollack Avenue. Immediately after, the new exhibit will be unveiled in the Interpretive Center. In addition to displays of artifacts collected by Eli Lilly, there will be a recreation of Glenn Black’s Angel Site office (with his original desk!), as well as interactive features that teach about archaeological methods pioneered by Black right here at Angel!
Come on out to Angel to see these exciting developments for yourself!
